SB84 Passes, Allowing Licenses For Certified Professional Midwives in Kentucky

Hard work pays off. Today, on March 13th, 2019, after a 44-year fight and after 8 years of the Kentucky Home Birth Coalition, SB 84 passed its final vote on the House floor.

After a quick concurrence from the Senate and a signature from the Governor, we will start the regulatory process to license Certified Professional Midwives and integrate them into Kentucky’s healthcare system.

After the vote, we have been overwhelmed with messages of support. What I want you all to take from this is that constituent led lobbying is hard work, but effective. You have the power to make our state a better place.

Thank you to everyone who wrote, emailed, called, sent a text or met with a Legislator over the last 8 years. Thank you for donations, traveling to Frankfort and for sharing action alerts. Thank you to every legislator who voted yes.

It was a long road, but all our hard work has paid off. We will still need to continue fundraising and work during the regulatory process, but right now we celebrate.

Keep your eyes peeled for celebrations near you and a ceremonial signing.
